The video this week was relevant to everything that has been changing throughout the world. Some would call it globally, others regional, or country specific.

Transportation is a big topic and Salish did her driving test on her video profile. Her dad was out of town and she had several people help her out with preparing and completing the driving test requirements.

There are a lot of things on the show that we already know way before we take the test. Screaming at drivers is unacceptable conduct. This is considered dangerous, much like texting, reading, sleeping, or even playing the radio too loud while driving. The preferred noise level in a vehicle is quiet with the radio on low if necessary. That is why portable DVD players and video games are recommended for passengers if they can not stay still and quiet throughout a drive.

Kids start asking questions about driving about 10-12 years old. They also learn about sitting quietly in the care way younger than that.

The appropriate age for driving and working is seen as 14-15 years old globally. Many people work with their families and jobs with other families or major corporations have been suggested to provide job training through school at that same age.

Driving Tips

There was a road rage incident. Salish's conduct is seen as completely appropriate because the first and foremost concern and priority is her personal safety. Because of their conduct, many police officers would recommend to hit the driver or passenger and drive away. There may not be very many places to file a police report in the future anyways. In the meantime, stop by a police station afteward and explain what happened.

The show explains some of the other concepts very well and highlights concerns for new drivers. Parking is a bummer sometimes, those are normally inexpensive fixes. They can be done in an hour or two if technicians are available.

Slowing down near pedestrians is important. Many people stop and drive slowly around vehicles. However, when parking on the street its important to consider unsafe neighborhoods. Like if a specific spot was unfeasible and tryin a different spot results in street level harassment, it may be an unsafe neighborhood. Its important to be aware of surroundings outside the vehicle while parked and when returning to the vehicle.

Police Discretion

There was a police stop on the show. Many of the laws addressed have changed and are in the process of being amended or repealed. Right of way in residential, yes - watch the driveways. Vehicle registration and insurance - outdated. Impound and towing - outdated. Most police can access a drivers license and registration database remotely. They can compare the picture in the remote database to the driver or passenger when they provide correct identifiers. It can be the id number or first name, last name and an address or birthday. Points on insurance is also in decline, people can only afford so much for insurance so once they are at their maximum value, the points have no effect anyways.

Three issues on the show that are no longer enforced in most areas are illegal uturns - nobody cares and it can waste gas or end up distressing the driver. Doing donuts in a parking lot, it actually helps to test the traction control on a vehicle and can help to make sure everything is working properly before a road trip. Just remember its not necessary to go that fast to test the traction. This brought up the concept of double yellow lines - not enforced in most areas. Its considered a waste of time for most people.

With these three concepts the main thing is safety. Crossing a double yellow line is not a big deal if there is no traffic or the traffic is moderate. If both sides of traffic are congested, then the double yellow line is uneccessary because it would likely be unsafe to try and cross the double yellow lines. Its similar with the no uturn sign, the goal is to not have drivers do a 3 point turn and get rear ended by oncoming traffic or stuck there for 30 minutes pinned against the curb.

Orange cones are not a good way to practice, they were initially used to help people learn to drive on tarmacs or other areas with lots of neon safety signs or flashing lights. Mostly, in a real world scenario, orange cones means slow down or stop. There is likely an accident or stalled driver nearby.

Driving School

Salish driving instructor has a website and is offering lessons in select zip codes near her home. This brings up concepts. Her licensing state is trying to set the age of adulthood for everything at 25 years old. Everyone who has not driven before must get a permit regardless of age. The requirement is 6 months of a permit, her instructors class is 60 hours.

If you think about it, that's about 10 hours per month. A lot of people get their permit and hardly drive before they get their license. They don't have anyone to sit in the car with them while they drive around. The recommendation is 4 hours every weekend which is 32 hours over 2 months. Plus 2 Hour night drives, 4 of them. and then 2 hours of 15 to 30 minutes night driving.

After week 11, night drives can be 15 minute drives with up to two 30 minute drives.

Independent Driving Time Schedule

The recommended time is 40-50 hours which is reasonable over 4-6 months. There is also the 10 hours of nightime driving which brings this up to 50-60 hours. Because kids grow up playing video games and hanging out at go cart places, the main thing is safety. Her driving instructor has more details on their FAQ page which is linked from her video profile.

Most kids would need to read the FAQ and would want the phase 2 driver intensive. It would have a value of $1200 to $1500 and the kids would want their driver log and their permit, license, insurance, and registration accesible on the website. It makes sense that the police would be able to access this information if pulled over, it may not be necessary because of the concept of tap and pay tickets with the police cam rolling. Most places don't give out tickets anymore, they arrest people for unsafe driving only.

If the website were to have these features, then the driving requirements could be logged through the same website throughout a lifetime or trasferred to another school. The drivers would be able to upload their insurance card there and it would only be accessible if pulled over for another reason or if in an accident.

In the meantime, her driving instructor allows doing the driving classes, there is a login for the website, and it seems they can approve the permit if everything else looks good.
