Dating is a big theme for Salish because she is around 15/16 years old and its a time where young adults make decisions on sexuality, time keeping, free time, and availability. She has done a lot of dating events over the last year with close to 30 dates although less than 10 of them were one on one. Dating is definitely different, not only across age groups, but across geographies, cultures, and lifestyles. Many people are not into the hookup culture of the 1990s, some people still are.
Two of the boys, were actually girls, Joely and Txunamy. The rest were boys and Markell was likely not a date but definitely not a babysitter also. Gender neutral events are often a theme, and many people are required to at least consider a same sex relationship when looking. If not for inclusion, at least to save time later on when screening someone new, someone similar, or someone completely different than any past boyfriends.
Dates are not so cliche any more and many people date for diversity, as well as homogeneity, regardless of whether or not they will be having kids or meeting parents. This can be things like height, weight, build, hair color, eye color, or behavior expressions. Its a lot different than asking the person next door if they would like to see a move with you, and then ending up married after finishing college.
Much of the world is multi-cultural and very accepting of other peoples decisions. Regardless of how things may seem at times, its perfectly normal to ask someone on a date because "that's what I'm into right now". Its also fine to decline, because thats just not my style.
Salish is on a date with Gio - a favorite, Angelo - someone new, Nidal - the childhood sweetheart, and Joely and Txunamy who are both actually girls. All teenagers on the show are allowed to date up to a 24 year old because the laws have changed in her home state. This is part of an overall trend in dating, and many people are watching to see what the teenagers will decide and how the parents feel about the whole situation.
